The material that this film is based on (the legendary film maker Fellini’s masterpiece “8 1/2” and the Broadway musical adaptation of that film) is practically flawless. Yet somehow the director of this travesty has decided to throw away more than half of the score of the show, turn the main character from a complex artist on the verge of a creative breakdown/break through into a one note egocentric chauvinist, and most sacrilegiously he and the screenwriter have made a film about film making as cinematically inert as a Liftetime Channel movie of the week. The genius of Fellini’s original was that he found a new and unique cinematic language for a semi autobiographical film about an artist who couldn’t find anything new or unique to say. The Broadway musical “Nine”, operating without the obvious advantages of a camera, still focuses heavily on the artistic process and retains much of the dream like quality of the film and much of its irony ( and features one of the most beautiful scores of any musical). But somehow Rob Marshal has decided that he would excise most of what came before and make an extended music video, a la MTV. This worked for his other foray into film musicals, “Chicago” — a show about the shallowness of American society and its worship of celebrity. For that his style was a perfect fit! Unfortunately it doesn’t work here, for the true heart of “8 1/2” and “Nine” is man’s search for his soul through art, something this film has none of. Wasted cast, wasted opportunity. The story of Guido Contini's life and legacy is so inviting, and each female cast member grabs their chance to shine and steals the show. Everything is stylish and beautiful throughout the film, leading up to a semi-tragic ending and a surreal closing scene that will leave you deep in thought. One to watch again and again.
